   - PROPER INKJET CARTRIDGE CLEANING
      & STORAGE TECHNIQUES 

      Including Wiper Maintenance Information.

To reduce the chance of ink drying and clogging the inkjet nozzles; the ink cartridges should be removed from the printer, cleaned, and properly stored; whenever the printer is not going to be used for more than a few hours.

INKJET CARTRIDGE CLEANING
Since the following printer models do NOT have the ability to automatically clean inkjet nozzles; the ink cartridges must be removed and manually cleaned, on a routine basis, in order to maintain good print quality.
Newer Rena Systems Models: Envelope Imager 1.5/1.5+/2.5/3.0/4.0/XT3.0/XT4.0
                                            and XPS-ProMail 3.0/4.0
Older "legacy" Models:          
*PS1000/2000, XPS-80, DA615 and Envelope Imager I/ II/ III.

When should ink cartridges be manually cleaned?

  • Before the start of a print job (run).

  • During a run, when ever the print quality becomes unsatisfactory.

Note: To improve the print quality of the first addresses printed, it is recommended that the Cartridge Purge Feature be used after cleaning ink cartridges and anytime after the printer is paused, just before putting the printer on-line.

CARTRIDGE PURGE FEATURE:
The printer’s “Head Recovery” or "Purge" feature can be used to help un-clog print nozzles.
When you activate this feature; all nozzles are then fired onto a mail piece.
It is recommended that this feature be used, just before putting the printer on-line; after cleaning ink cartridges and anytime after the printer is paused.

Newer Rena Systems Models:
Take the printer off-line. Press the "MENU" key. If "Media Thickness Setup" is displayed, press the Plus (+) Key. When "Press ENTER to Purge" is displayed. Press the ENTER key. The printer will feed and print a "Purge" pattern.
Older "legacy" Models:
Take the printer off-line. Press the START and Back Space (Repeat Address(es)) keys together. The printer will feed and print a “Head Recovery” pattern.
The cartridge Purge feature is not available in the DA590/600/606/607 models.

Envelope Imager III: Use the Main Menu Feature "Purge Printheads".
 

AUTOMATIC INKJET CARTRIDGE CLEANING
The following printer models have built-in, automatic cartridge cleaning.
Newer Rena Systems model: Envelope Imager CS.
Older "legacy" models: DA590/595/600/606/607/608/610,
                                 DA620 (Digital Imaging System), DA630A (XPS-90)

In order to maintain print quality, at its highest level, the above printer models
automatically clean the inkjet cartridge nozzles at the following frequency:

  • Every time the printer is powered on.

  • Every time the printer is placed on-line, from the off-line condition.

  • Before every TEST address is printed.

  • After every few hundred addresses are printed (user selectable in some printer models).

Even on printers that have automatic cleaning and capping; in some cases it may be necessary to remove and manually clean inkjet cartridges.

MANUALLY CLEANING INKJET CARTRIDGES
To manually clean inkjet cartridges, we recommend using a Cartridge Wipe material (Rena part # 2023). This is a high quality, lint free material. We also suggest the use of distilled water in the cleaning process. Please note that the use of “abrasive materials” and water, which has mineral content in it, may cause damage to the ink cartridge nozzles and or clog ink cartridge nozzles.

 How to Manually Clean Ink Cartridges:

  • Place a drop of distilled water on the edge of the Cartridge Wipe cloth.

  • Start by placing the nose of the cartridge onto this wet area.

  •  Using a small amount of downward force, slowly pull the cartridge from the wet area, across the dry area of the Cartridge Wipe, while slowly decreasing the amount of downward force.

  • Repeat this procedure a few times. Make sure you only clean the cartridge in one direction. Either from the front of the head to the back of the head, or from back to front.

Cartridge Wipes (Rena Part# 2023 = 100 wipes per pack) may be purchased through your local Rena Dealer.

 

INKJET CARTRIDGE STORAGE
Since there is no automatic cartridge sealing station built into the following printer models; when these printers are not in use, the inkjet cartridges must be removed, properly cleaned and sealed, in order to keep them from drying and becoming clogged. 
Older "legacy" models:
*PS1000/2000, Envelope Imager I/II/III/2XP, DA590/600/606/607/615 models.
Newer Rena Systems Models: Envelope Imager 1.5/1.5+/2.5/3.0/4.0/XT3.0/XT4.0, XPS-ProMail 3.0/4.0,

Since the DA595/608/610, DA620 (Digital Imaging System), DA630A (XPS-90), and Envelope Imager CS models have a “built in” automatic cartridge sealing station, there is no need to remove and seal cartridges when these printer models are not in use.
Note: The DA630M (XPS-80) has a "built in" manual cartridge sealing station.

In addition, if you own a DA610 S/N 297 or lower, be sure the head carriage height adjustment lever, located at the far right side of the carriage assembly, is in the lowest position. If not, the cartridges will not be properly sealed. DA610’s S/N 298 and higher do not have this lever. 

IMPORTANT!
Another reason for removing inkjet cartridges, from your *PS1000/2000, Envelope Imager I/ II/ III, DA590/600/606/607/615 printer, is to prevent the possibility that a cartridge may leak ink into the printer, when the printer is not being used, and cause damage to the printer. Rena Systems Inc. will not warranty printer damage caused by ink or other foreign objects. Please be aware that “re-filled” ink cartridges have a much greater probability of leaking than cartridges that have never been “re-filled”.

Inkjet Cartridge Storage Procedures:

Envelope Imager 1.5/1.5+/2.5/3.0/4.0/XT3.0/XT4.0 & XPS-ProMail 3.0/4.0 Models:
*PS1000/2000, Envelope Imager I/ II/ III  & DA615 Models:
These printers use the 45A style ink cartridges.
Place a damp piece of cloth into the bottom of the container.
Clean the cartridges, as described previously.
Place the cartridges into the container, making sure the contact pads and nozzle plates do not touch the damp cloth. Then seal the container. This will create a humid atmosphere which will help keep the ink from drying and clogging the cartridge nozzles.
Makes sure the cartridge is dry before placing it back into the printer or damage to the printer's electronics may result.
Using a soft dry cloth, wipe any moisture from the cartridge casing, especially the gold contact area, before placing the cartridges back into the printer. Do not dry the nozzle area.
In addition; a commonly used, but less preferred method of storing cartridges is to use a cartridge storage stand. Order Rena part # 141117. Remember to clean the cartridge, as described previously, and also to clean the rubber pad in the storage stand, before returning a cartridge to the stand.

XPS-80
Remember to clean the cartridge, as described previously, and also to periodically clean the rubber pad in the sealing (capping) station.
When the XPS-80 is not printing, the print units must be pushed back into their "parked" position, in order to properly seal the cartridges.

DA607/606/600/590 Models:
These printers use the C51638A (HP51626A) style cartridge. There is a cartridge storage stand available for these ink cartridges. Order Rena part # 141118. Remember to clean the cartridge, as described previously, and also to clean the rubber pad in the storage stand, before returning a cartridge to the stand. 
NOTE
: As an alternative method, a re-sealable container can be used to store cartridge.

 

WIPER MAINTENANCE
To ensure good print quality, the cartridge cleaning lip (wiper), in the following Rena printer models, must be manually cleaned on a routine basis.
DA590/600/606/607/608/610, DA620 (Digital Imaging System), DA630A (XPS-90)
A dirty or worn wiper will clog ink cartridge nozzles. Worn wipers should be replaced by a qualified Rena service person.

To avoid possible injury, wiper cleaning should only be performed while the printer is powered off.  It is recommended that wipers be cleaned at the beginning or end of each days use.   It is recommended to wear rubber gloves while cleaning the wipers.

NOTE: In DA610’s S/N 297 or lower, be sure the head carriage height adjustment lever, located at the far right side of the Carriage Assembly, is in it’s lowest position. If not, the cartridges will not contact the wiper, and will not be properly cleaned. DA610’s S/N 298 and higher do not have this lever.

 Procedure for Cleaning Wipers

  • Turn off power to the printer. (XPS-90, DA620- Place Print Units into the "Service Position" before you power off the printer.)

  • Carefully slide the print head carriage away from the cartridge cleaning/sealing area. (XPS-90, DA620- Place Print Units in Service Position)

  • Using a Cartridge Wipe, lightly moistened with distilled water, clean ink from the wiper and the area surrounding the wiper. You may need to perform this procedure a few times to remove all ink. (XPS-90, DA620, the "carrier plates", which contain the wipers and felt pad, may be removed for easier cleaning and or replacement.)

NOTE: Foam tipped swabs may initially be used, to remove excessive ink from the wiper and the area around the wiper. A final cleaning, using a Cartridge Wipe, is recommended to insure that any lint, left behind from the swab, is removed. If lint, or other debris, is left on the wiper, the wiper will not perform properly.

* The PS1000 controller was used in some of the original XPS1000 units.
*The PS2000 controller was used in newer XPS-1000 units and in all of the XPS2000/3000 units.
